How To Keep Your Hair Healthy During The Winter Months

Living in Calgary in the winter, we are considered one of the driest places on Earth. Drier than the Sahara Desert in fact where our humidity drops to just 4% compared to 7% in the Desert! That’s wild! So what do we do to keep our hair in optimal condition during these months?

First, moisturize! Not only is this great for our skin, but our hair needs it too! This doesn’t mean run out and buy moisturizing shampoo. Always talk to your stylist about the best shampoos for your type of hair, but we can add moisture through leave in conditioners and masks. Leave in conditioners were made initially for helping with static in the hair. Static is a result of dryness. Now, leave in conditioners can also be your heat protectants and shine. Some of my favourites are the Oi All In One Milk and the Iles Formula Finishing Serum. The All In One Milk is a multi function leave in spray that softens, detangles, controls frizz and protects hair from heat while the Finishing Serum protects against heat styling, UV, colour fade and humidity to create a spun silk suppleness to the hair.

Masks are another great tool for adding moisture to the hair. There are many different types of masks, so you want to be sure you are getting one for moisture (Olaplex #3 is not a moisture mask!). Some great ones are the Iles Formula Mask which will strengthen, nourish and give extra suppleness to the hair. The Redken Heavy Cream is an anti- frizz moisture mask for dry and brittle hair while the Oi Hair Butter is also anti- frizz to create nourishment and hydration in the hair.

Lastly, how you care for your hair will play a large part in how your hair reacts this winter. Never go outside with wet hair. The water molecules will expand and can cause the hair to break. Make sure to always sleep with your hair in a braid and use a silk pillowcase to prevent rubbing and breakage while you sleep and finally use a wet brush to detangle the hair. The nylon bristles will glide through the hair and prevent any ripping or breaking.

Follow these tips and watch your hair flourish during the winter months!
