The Best Tones For Your Skin

I hear it all the time, “Does this work with my skin tone”. It’s such a fundamental thing that we need to pay attention to when choosing our hair colour and makeup, yet, we were usually never taught what our skin tone is. Why does this matter? Knowing your skin tone is the key to finding the right foundation as well as the best makeup and hair colours to compliment you. Below I’m going to breakdown how to choose the tones that work best for you.

There are three universal skin tones: warm, cool and neutral. These refer to the undertones of your skin. Warm undertones include peach, yellow and gold while cool undertones are pink or blueish. If you are neutral, your undertones are generally the same colour as your skin.

How to tell which undertone you are:

Check your veins. We do this by looking at the inside of our wrists. If your veins are greenish, then you are a warm undertone. Anyone with purple or blueish veins are a cool undertone. If you are neutral then your veins appear colourless and match the colour of your skin.

Look at your jewelry. If you are drawn more towards gold jewelry, you are usually a warmer skin tone. Silver jewelry, you are cool.

Your clothes. Throw on a true white shirt, if this compliments you better than a brown shirt, you tend to be cooler. Warmer tones tend to favour the browns.

Now that you know your skin tone, which colours do we wear? Cool tones compliment platinum and ash coloured hair really well. For makeup it likes purples, rose golds, and reds that have pink undertones.

Mahogany and golden colours work best for warmer tones. Think chestnut, chocolate or even warm reds. Yellow, gold and peach makeup looks best on you.

Now olive skin has both neutral and warm tones along with green. Green is considered unique to olive skin tones and can cause all three undertones to suit your skin. This means you can wear cool or warm palettes.

Shopping for foundations. Cool foundations will look pink in the bottle, avoid yellow foundations as this can make you look sallow. Warm undertones though, you go for the yellow foundations. For neutral foundations, go for peach foundations. These won’t look overly yellow or pink in the bottle.

So the next time your shopping for makeup or looking at hair on pinterest (other than calling on me, your personal hair and makeup artist!) consider these facts to get the best colours customized to you!
