What Aftercare Should I Follow When I Get My Grey Covered?

Whether you are just starting to go grey of have been fully grey for a long time, it may be confusing to know how to maintain and treat your grey coverage colour at home.

Start by not shampooing the hair for 24-48 hours. This allows the cuticle to close and protect the colour that has been deposited inside. Every time you wash your hair, the cuticle opens slightly and releases colour. To close the cuticle properly, rinse with cold water for extra longevity and shine.

Next, make sure you are using a shampoo and conditioner suitable to your hair type. Most shampoos will be colour safe, so if you have issues with moisture, frizz or damage, be sure to use a shampoo that treats those issues. If you have no major issues, you can use a colour protecting shampoo like Davines Minu Shampoo and Conditioner that is designed to give shine, moisture and longevity to colour.

With longevity being said, most colours are done with a semi permanent on the ends so as not to disrupt the cuticle too much, causing damage. Semi permanents will last 6-8 weeks and will look depleted and lacking shine after that time. Between that and the normal grow out of grey, you will want to book your follow up root retouch anywhere from 6-8 weeks after your previous appointment.
